Definition of Direct Sales and of Words Beginning with D

Direct Sales - The sale of products or services directly to the end user rather than through a retail location. Most commonly the term refers to sales by an independent distributor or consultant through home sales parties, network marketing, and other person-to-person presentations, but sales made by a manufacturer directly to the end consumer are also direct sales.

Distributor - An independent sales person who markets products for a direct sales company and sponsors other consultants. The term distributor seems to be used more in network marketing while the party plan companies seem to refer to their independent sales people as consultants. Other terms for a distributor include associate and representative.

Downline - A group of consultants who were all recruited or sponsored by the same consultant. The sponsoring consultant often trains and mentors her downline and usually earns additional sales commissions for sales made by the downline. Also referred to as a team.
